Taking your science to the classroom in 2025?
How to Inspire Young Minds: A Special Opportunity for Scientists
Happy New Year from a frosty UK!
I am writing this from the UK where I have been taking the time to catch up with family and walk in the lovely frosty countryside near Ashdown Forest.
In just over a week I will be travelling to Taiwan to give a series of teacher training lectures/workshops focusing on the why and the how of developing school courses in geology. Geoscience is a perfect theme for training young minds in making clear observations and then deriving conceptual insights from them. The backdrop of the natural world is a profound and powerful context that gives students an awareness of time and space relationships on planet earth.
To help the teachers develop connections with geoscience researchers in Taiwan, some scientists will be participating in the conference to share their take on a variety of geoscience topics.
Having both a family and work break at the New Year makes it feel like a good time to set goals and put some priorities in place for the months ahead. An important and happy goal for me this year is to combine my developing passion for paragliding with my science communication work. What will 2025 be for you?
Are you a scientist or educator with a passion for your field and a desire to share it with the next generation? Do you dream of making your school visits not just memorable but truly transformative for the students you meet? If so, I’ve got something special for you.
Why Schools Need Scientists Like You
When scientists step into classrooms, magic can happen. Young people get to see real-world examples of curiosity, discovery, and the thrill of uncovering how our planet works. Your own presence, your life experience, your adventures in the realm of learning, your passion, humour and way of communicating, have the potential to activate new thoughts and interests in the students. Engaging with schools isn’t just about showing up and sharing facts. It’s about understanding how students can fire up with enthusiasm for learning, what teachers’ needs are, and how to inspire a lifelong love for science within a rich, well designed curriculum.
That’s why I have created an online course designed specifically to unlock the potential power of school engagements for scientists like you.
Change the Way You Communicate
This highly practical course is tailored to help you see your science communication through the eyes of educators. It pulls together what I have learnt as a seasoned school educator and teacher-trainer with an additional 17 years of experience as a full time geoscience communicator in Aotearoa New Zealand.
In a series of bite sized sessions, using your own tailored workbook, you’ll gain actionable insights and create a personalized school engagement plan that will boost your confidence and fast track your planning. Here’s what you’ll learn:
